Birmingham 2022 wants to see Birmingham and the West Midlands reflected in its search for a mascot for the Games

In Detail

The Birmingham 2022 mascot will be a global icon for the Games. And so, of course, it needs to highlight everything that is brilliant about Birmingham and the West Midlands!

The city and region are bursting with heritage and culture, both of which can be incorporated into your design. Here are some ideas to get you thinking…

Food for thought

Birmingham is famous for its food. We’ve got numerous Michelin–starred restaurants dotted about the city, as well as the Balti Triangle to the south which is brimming with authentic curry houses. Why not add some culinary inspiration to your mascot? Maybe it’ll wear a chef’s hat?

Or what about everybody’s favourite treat? Chocolate! Cadbury’s was founded in Birmingham – so could your mascot be made from chocolate or cocoa beans?

Many of us know the iconic Selfridges building with its unique exterior of silver disks. But thinking further afield, have you considered the other incredible buildings in the West Midlands? The stunning Worcester cathedral is renowned for its beautiful stained glass windows and ornate architecture. Whilst the Red House Cone in Stourbridge in the Black Country is a 90-foot high conical brick structure that was used for the production of glass.

Could your mascot be wearing any of these shapes or patterns?

Should your mascot be a budding author? After all, the West Midlands was home to some of the best. Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire is the birthplace of William Shakespeare, and the world-famous author J.R.R. Tolkein, who wrote The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, grew up in Birmingham. Some of his writing even took inspiration from a place called Sarehole Mill in Hall Green. Plus, did you know that Birmingham is home to Europe’s largest library? Have a go at bringing some of these literature references into your design.

In the West Midlands, we’re spoilt with an abundance of stunning countryside, from the enchanting Cannock Chase Forest – which is one of our venues for the Games – to the stunning natural beauty of the Malvern Hills down in Worcestershire.

Will you design an eco-friendly mascot? We hope this gets you on your way, but if you need some more inspiration, perhaps Richie can help?
